Common questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Roanoke?
In the City of Roanoke, city code Sec. 33-2 requires a city permit to cut, trim, prune or remove trees in public streets, ways, grounds or other city property. It does not cover trees entirely on private property. Exceptions to watch: street trees in the strip by the curb, and trees required under an approved development plan. When in doubt, call Roanoke Urban Forestry (540-853-1994, per the city's street tree permit form).
What about Salem, Vinton, Roanoke County or Botetourt?
Each locality has its own ordinances. The City of Roanoke rules do not apply there. Check with the specific city, town or county, and with VDOT for trees in state-maintained road rights-of-way.
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
It depends on your policy. Coverage often depends on whether the tree damaged a covered structure, and there may be limits on debris removal. Read your policy or call your agent, document the damage with photos before cleanup, and keep receipts.
A tree fell on my house. What should I do first?
Get people out of affected rooms, stay away from downed wires, and do not try to cut a tree resting on a structure. Photograph the damage, call your insurer, and call a tree crew for controlled removal.
My neighbor's tree fell on my property. Who pays?
Liability depends on the circumstances and your policies. Talk to your insurer first; for disputes, consult a Virginia attorney.
Should I hire an insured company?
Yes. Ask for current certificates of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage.
What is an ISA Certified Arborist?
A professional certified by the International Society of Arboriculture in tree care knowledge. For formal risk assessments, ask whether the arborist holds ISA's Tree Risk Assessment Qualification.
Is topping a tree okay?
No. Topping leaves stubs that decay and triggers weakly attached regrowth. Proper reduction cuts are the alternative.
Do I need to call 811 before stump grinding?
Utility lines should be marked before digging or grinding below grade. In Virginia, dial 811 for free marking; your contractor usually places the request.
Can you remove a tree near power lines?
Trees touching or close to energized lines need the utility involved. Do not attempt it yourself.
